Lot Information

This was housed in the Tom Morris shop until 1936 where it was removed after the Morris family relinquished control of their shop.Recently unearthed after some 83 years, this is extremely rare painting of Tom Morris. In the mid-1930s although the Morris family kept ownership of the world-famous name and the shop, they franchised it out to another family. This family removed all old stock and other items. This wonderful painting was amongst five other related Morris items which have been unearthed, which are listed in later lots. Galpin is a noted Scottish artist. Experts at St. Andrews and even the world?s leading authority on the Morris family tells me it is a 'Rare and Substantial Piece of Artwork of Tom Morris' Galpin has drawn Morris in his younger days, his beard and other areas are highlighted in white gouache paint. Single line drawings of Morris below the main illustration shows Morris playing golf with the R&A Clubhouse in the background. but not the Hamilton Grand Hotel which was built in 1895. Painted on stiff card, the boarders have some creases and tears. This is a rare piece of golfing history. This artwork was used to make a a yearly calander to be sold from the shop - See Lot 199
