|Some of the pre-existing holes were left in play (the western portion of the property) while the new holes to the east were being built. The club mandated that 18 holes be in play at all times during the redesign, so Flynn was likely tasked with completing the design of the holes in the recently acquired land first. Then when these holes opened as holes 1-9 on the map, the remaining 9 holes were redesigned and designed. Shinnecock Hills, besides being one of the finest championship courses in the world, yet still playable by all classes of golfers, is unique in that 4 important golf architects designed and revised the designs on the same location. Willie Davis and Willie Dunn designed in a geometric style, CB Macdonald designed in his National style with evident man-made features not naturally tied into the surrounds, and finally William Flynn's natural style that appears minimal yet hides significant interventions in the earth moving...that is why he called himself the Nature Faker. These plans and aerial photographs were the basis for the recent long-range restoration and master plan. The consignor has written a book detailing the life of William Flyn. The winning bid will also a copy of this book in pdf format.|
