Lot 251 Wooden-headed putter reputedly owned by Samuel Ryder, donor of the Ryder Cup and with direct provenance to his family. This putter (stamped 'S R') was purchased directly from John Ryder-Smith at his family home near Jevington in Sussex in the early 1990s. Ryder-Smith was married to Samuel Ryder's granddaughter, Rosalind, Mr Ryder-Smith described it as one of a small number of 'back up putters' owned and used by Old Sam before his death in 1936. He also explained that he had recently had the upright putter 'renovated' as he was about to donate it to the British P.G.A. at The Belfry, but had changed his mind.

Lot 252 The (Blackheath) Golf Pennant: The Oldest Golf Flag Ever Known. This is the oldest known golf flag we have ever come across and dates we believe from around the 1790s. With flared edges, it shows the image of a golfer and his caddie with what looks like Blackheath Golfer from the Blackheath Common in south-east London where golf first came to England. We know of only one more which was located in the collection of a prominent collector in South of England ? it is a red and white dyed coloured cloth, it has has been pinned onto a mount ready for framing. Consigned to us by a golf historian of many years standing, this is one of the rarest & earliest items we have ever offered for sale.

Framed size is 20 by 20 inches the flag size is 14 by 14 inches. The Club's own artifacts evidence its existence as early as 1745, with the Edinburgh Almanac stating that Blackheath was established prior to this date. (As RBGC state on their website: The higher ground at Blackheath provided perfect conditions.) The first definite evidence of club activity is a silver club presented by Henry Foot for a competition in 1766 and played for ever since. This date would still make Royal Blackheath th...
